Many women have their ears pierced across most cultures.
The biggest difference is the timing of when we get them pierced.
Here in Japan people tend to pierce their ears as adults.
In Latin cultures we pierce our ears as babies.
There are many reasons behind this. For my family specifically, we believe it brings good luck and financial stability.
The first piercings are done with gold. And are usually difficult to remove to ensure we keep our riches with us. Once we get older they get replaced with ones that can be changed often. As we grow and reach milestones in our lives we add more gold. For example, a bracelet for graduation, necklace for first communion, a ring for a wedding etc.
My ears were first pierced when I was 6 months old. Then again for High School Graduation, and three more times in college. In total 7 times!
Ive been in Japan so long I am no not used to seeing children with piercings. However, recently I have noticed more and more children with pierced ears. It's an interesting change.

日本では、大人になってからピアスを開けることが多いようです。
ラテン文化圏では、赤ちゃんの時にピアスを開けるのです。
これにはさまざまな理由があります。
我が家では、幸運と経済的な安定をもたらすと信じています。
最初のピアスは金で開けられます。そして、富を守るために、通常は取り外すのが難しいものです。
年齢が上がると、頻繁に付け替えられるものに変えていきます。 成長し、人生の節目を迎えると、さらにゴールドを追加していきます。
例えば、卒業式にはブレスレットを、初聖体にはネックレスを、結婚式には指輪を、といった具合です。
私の耳に初めてピアスをしたのは生後6ヶ月のときでした。その後、高校卒業時にもう一度、そして大学時代に3回。合計7回です。
日本での生活が長かったので、ピアスをしている子供を見慣れませんでした。でも、最近はピアスをしている子が増えてきました。面白い変化ですね。
